Marine and Wildlife Conservation

As part of the RRPP’s efforts on sustainable development and environment protection, the Project embarked in a marine and wildlife conservation program. The Marine Conservation Program with the support of the local communities, helped in the rescue of marine turtles, a dolphin, and a juvenile whale shark (butanding).

The company continues its efforts to rid the coral reefs of crown-of-thorns starfish (COTS) infestation through partnership with local communities. To date. COTS collection has been done at the barangays of Mananao, Viga, Buenavista, Galicia, and Morocborocan. The project also actively discourages blast fishing along its coast.

The company espouses conservation of wildlife existing in the project area. Existing forest tree species are left untouched. The accommodation camp has rich vegetation at the southeast and wild birds can be seen on clear days. The area abounds in black-naped orioles, locally called kikiaw and black crows. Sightings of wild ducks at the tailings pond and sedimentation ponds have been documented. Since the project started, the company has communicated its policy on wildlife conservation. Catching and killing of wildlife such as reticulated pythons, monitor lizards (bayawak), and wild birds, and taking out of the island wild plants such as bonsai are strictly prohibited. Trapped wildlife are freed at the dense vegetation.
